Let me let you into a little secret...
Did you know that the soul two purpose of practising yoga are:
1. To get our body healthy and without illness or injury so that we can sit in meditation for long periods of time without feeling uncomfortable?
2. To give our mind time to focus and be calmed and get a sense of stillness in the mind to prepare for meditation.
Yes, our physical poses are great for keeping us strong, flexible and healthy, but they do have a deeper purpose.
It is important to learn how to do poses correctly so that we can give ourselves these physical benefit and to practise Yoga without injury.
But also important to work on focusing our mind, giving it that one pointedness and stilling the mind to give us that feeling of peace and readiness to meditate.
How do we do that?
We focus within in our body, focus our mind on our breath and provide a focus point for the eyes.
So next time you are getting into a Yoga pose, yes work in the pose, but also make sure you have a bit of stillness in it, knowing that you are creating that focus, one pointedness and stillness in the mind.
Come and join me for one of my Yoga classes where we will explore this.
